The best way to become a millionaire in five years or less
93There is no product or service here
First, to be clear. I have no product, service, or affiliate program tied up with this hub. This is about my own personal journey and I hope it will help you in your own journey.
Why do you want to become a millionaire?
Before the 'how' in everything, comes the 'why.' You need to ask yourself why you want to become a millionaire first. The answer can't be as simple as "because I want to" or "because I could quit my job."
You need to have a real driving force that you're committed to. Even the way this hub request was posted shows a lack of commitment. "What is the best way to become a millionaire in 5 years or less?"
If you're only willing to put in 5 years to become a millionaire, why are you even bothering to try? You put 3 or 4 years into a University degree and do you walk out feeling you know everything you need to know?
So why do I want to become a millionaire or become 'rich?'
- To create a better life for my family, friends, and myself
- To be financially free and not be limited by money
- To help as many people as possible in the world
- To completely experience life and the world
I set my goal to become financially free when I was 22, now I'm 27 and I'm still not a millionaire. So why even listen to me? Good question? If you were really serious about becoming a millionaire in less than 5 years you would find people who have already done it and ask them.
What I can offer is a life filled with studying entrepreneurship and business, which I believe is the best way to become a millionaire. Some people prefer real estate and investing but I think businesses are simply more interesting.
If you still want to listen to what I have to say, welcome. I've learnt a lot in the last 5 years and I know, without doubt, I'll get there within the next 5 years. All I can offer you at this moment is what I've learnt, what I've tried, and how my thinking has changed.
What is a business?
When I talk about starting a business, I talk about creating a system that makes you money whether you are working or not.
I am NOT talking about get rich quick schemes that promise you thousands of dollars when you work 1 hour a week. It's a lie, move on with your life.
I am NOT talking about becoming self-employed. Working for yourself has a mindset that you are the only one that can do the work. If you want to grow a business and become a millionaire, you need to shed that belief and begin to create a business that will work without you.
I am talking about creating a business that produces a product or service of value to the community. It will have employees or you are not financially free. It is a system that you will build from scratch and slowly replace the technical tasks below you with employees, allowing you to grow your business.
What skills do I need?
Let's face the facts, building a successful business is difficult. Very difficult. I believe anyone has the potential to do it, but I'm never going to say it's easy.
It will take time, it will take hard work, it WILL take hard work (yes it's worth repeating), and it will take an approach to continuous learning that will blow your mind.
Most people think business is common sense and anyone can do it. It's time to wake up and start living in the real world. Look at all the big companies in the world and tell me you could of done that, right now, with just your common sense.
Then look at all the small companies in the world and realise that there are an incredible amount of really smart people that will never grow their business past it's current point. They will never reach the success they dream of.
It's up to you to be different. It's up to you to learn what it takes. It's up to you to make a commitment to learning that you can't even fathom at this point.
You'll need to become a master of:
- Marketing
- Finances
- Creating systems
- Managing staff
- Strategic planning
- Leadership
- Creativity
- Psychology
- and on...and on...and on...
It's impossible to create a list of all the skills you'll need, they'll change as you grow. The most important skill you'll need is an ability and desire to learn. You'll want to know why everything works, you'll want to know why people act the way they do, and you'll want to know how Bill Gates created Microsoft.
You will have such a passion for business you won't know what hit you. And your family and friends won't either!
Commit yourself to learning and face the fact that now, you know 0.0001% about the subject, and you're taking the first step on the road to success.
What are your strengths?
Every successful business and business person reached that point by focusing on their strengths. That may sound like a little bit of a contradiction after the previous section, but let me explain.
Strengths are what you are truly great at. They are the activities that come so easily to you that other people are amazed. You might be great at math, you could be fantastic with people, or you might understand technology like no one else.
When you are focused on your strengths, everything comes a lot easier to you. It positions you in the market in a way your competitors never can. By basing your business and your working activities around your strengths, you can produce tremendous results.
Only a few people even realise what their strengths are. Some people have a hint but have never managed to link it to their business. Until recently I didn't fully understand this incredible concept and the power it had for my business. Since then, my business grows more in a month than it did in the previous 6 months, and will continue to grow at an incredible rate as long as I continue to do so.
As an example, my strength is "seeing the big picture." I can look at a business and design a fabulous strategy, come up with innovative new ideas, and literally turn a business around. I can also start new projects with a lot of enthusiasm and effort, but you know what happens? I hate finishing projects! I always falter at the end, in the last 5 metres of the 100 metre race.
So I focus on my strengths in my business by designing strategies that would blow your socks off, but I make sure I'm not the person needing to do the implementation or we're all in trouble!
So what type of business do I start?
Your business will depend a lot on your strengths. If you get this right from the start, your growth will be a million times faster.
Of course, we're talking here about starting one business. Too many people, especially on the Internet, manage to tie themselves up in a million different websites, all with different products, and scatter their attention everywhere.
Another key to success is focus! This is maybe the hardest thing for some people, myself included, when it comes to creating a successful business. When great opportunities come at you left and right, you really have to have strength to say "no thanks" and go back to work on your business.
Ok, so we have one business and we understand our strengths a little more. Now we have the right mindset to create something great. So what do you do?
It's time to look at your strengths again. Combined with your strengths you'll have hobbies and activities that you really excel at. For some people it'll be something exciting that really gets them moving like playing football or decorating houses. Something they really have so much passion for that other people might look at them strangely from time to time.
For others, it may be a little less exciting...like plumbing. Now, to me plumbing isn't really exciting but perhaps you can find excitement in doing it, I mean no offense to the plumbers reading! But for example you might be the best at working out why a tap isn't working on how to fix it. You might be able to explain it in plain English and show people how to do it themselves. This could be your business.
Everyone has a passion, everyone has things they really love doing. You don't even have to be really great at it, you can always work out an angle that makes what you offer valuable.
Once you have a list of potential ideas, start researching. The best idea in the world means nothing if no one wants to buy it. Make sure you understand your potential market, what they want, what their problems are, and how your product or service can solve it.
You need to give before you receive
Now we've got a business idea that people are willing to pay money for and it's time to bring it to market. This is where another important mindset comes in.
Most people want that million dollars. Call it greed, or some other nice fuzzy name, but it exists inside all of us...there's no point in denying it. This can hinder the results of your business if you're not careful.
I'm not saying don't make money and I'm not saying don't enjoy making money but just be aware of this very important fact:
People are selfish!
It doesn't sound nice, but it's true. People want to know what they will receive in return for giving. You see it in business, you see it in relationships, you see it everywhere across the world. It's a fact of life and the longer you try to deny it, the longer you'll hold yourself back.
Remember how I said be open to learning? Not that easy is it!
So how do you beat this formula. Easy, you give more than you take. You give your little heart out and just watch the results. If your product or service is giving thousands of dollars worth of value, only charge hundreds of dollars. It seems strange, but the benefits are obvious when you look at it.
You see, if people are getting incredible value from you, then they are much more likely to tell everyone about you. And if you look at how the world is connected these days, this is definitely not a bad thing!
It's been an age old wealth principle, in order to receive, you must first be prepared to give. The great benefit of living in our age is the receiving happens so much faster.
So work out a way to offer incredible value to your customers, you business will thank you for it.
Do something, anything!
I wouldn't be surprised if you were reading this and thought "well it sounds nice, but it sounds like a lot of effort!"
I don't blame you, it is a lot of effort. But isn't everything worthwhile? Education, Relationships, Careers, don't these all take a lot of effort too? If you're going to be committed to something, it might as well make you a millionaire!
Now what is the single biggest factor that will stop you from becoming a millionaire?
Not taking action!
You can read all the books, you can study all the famous entrepreneurs, but if you don't start taking action you will never succeed. There's no point in learning if you're not going to use it.
There are people that have become millionaires that started off far stupider, poorer, and uglier than you! Whatever excuse you have, there is someone who has overcome that 'handicap' to become successful.
The only person you have to make excuses to is yourself. That's the hard truth. As much as I want you to be successful, if you read this hub and still don't find yourself successful it's really not going to effect my life.
It just effects your life. So work out what you're afraid of, what the real reason you're not putting this into practice is. Then go buy a book and learn how to overcome it.
Becoming financially free is not an overnight thing. It's just putting one foot in front of the other until you arrive at your destination. To be honest, it's a little boring knowing I'm going to achieve it and I just have to follow the steps.
Once you destroy all the mystery around being a millionaire, you realise it really is as simple as just taking action every day. How dull!
So I challenge you, when you've finished reading, to do something. Even writing in the comments that you want to do this is at least admitting it to yourself and putting it out there for the world to see. Is typing a few words and clicking a button that much effort?
Shall I summarise?
Ok, so maybe I get a little excited about this topic. For those of you that want the short version, here is my 7 step process to becoming a millionaire in 5 years or less:
- Find the real reason you want this goal
- Focus on what you want to do and let nothing stop you
- Realise you know nothing and be prepared to learn
- Discover your strengths and work with them
- Come up with your killer idea
- Give value to everyone you can
- Never stop taking action
I realise this is a lot to take in, but if you're really committed to becoming financially free one day, this is only the beginning!
I hope you got some value out of it and let me know if you have anything to add or want more information on something. I'm always happy to try and help.
So thanks for reading and I look forward to hearing your feedback.

Hi Craig,
I must disagree with this comment you made "I am NOT talking about becoming self-employed. Working for yourself is still working and it usually results in longer hours with less pay. That is just a fact."
I've been co-owner of a small construction company for over 20 years. Yes, I do work longer hours, and most of the time that is by choice. But I certainly don't work for less pay! I don't believe that is fact at all.
The small business owners that I know all make more than the people that they hire to work for them.
One of the reasons of becoming self-employed is so that you can keep all the fruits of your labor. That usually results in higher pay, not lower pay.
Don't take the comment personally. I enjoyed your hub and agreed with everything you wrote about except for that one comment.
Bottom line: self-employment is a LOT of work and will not bring you instant riches. We both agree on that.
Although contradicting at times, you gave some great tips!
Thanks!
Brilliant again as usual Craig.
Super hub Craig. I too feel self-employed is a single person who in MOST cases is still trading dollars for hours. I real business is one in which you have residual income yourself or you leverage others (i.e. employees) to make your income.
A great read! Thanks!
Terrific information and I have been involved with Robert and his teaching for years. Great added touch to include his videos.
I applaud you for making a decision early in life and going for it. So many people wait until they hit their 30s to decide they hate their job. Then it takes them 2 or 3 more years to figure out who they are without that job and what they really want to do when they grow up. (I'm speaking from experience.)
Good for you!
I enjoyed the read. You lays out the process of the mindset that is needed to go through and decide 'what do I want and why'. I have always enjoyed learning but you are right I will never get to a Million if I don't apply it somehow and stay focused! The videos are a great addition too.

Good Comments given by you man.
Started RDPD only a year ago. Replaced bad debt with good debt. Net worth has creeped up from less than 50k to 200k in one yer. Wish I started this or had some education in my 20's on wealth. I applaud all you 20 somethings out there obtaining wealth. Remember to give. Thanks
I actually enjoyed this article and it's "average guy" approach. I found it motivating, I recently quit nursing school because I wanted a "safe" career that will always keep me employable, but my true dream is to be abundantly wealthy where I can have the freedom to work charitably when I chose.
Hi Craid, great hub
They laughted at me when I purchased 2 blocks of land in a rural area a couple of years ago I made sure it was close to the hospital and school
They ar enot laughing now because on the corner block I have just had approval to build three shops and two 2 bedroom units above the shops
on the second block i have approval to build two town houses
Now who is laughing ... oh by the way I paid $15.00 cash for each block :)
Construction starts in August and... I have espressions of interest signed on the three shops ..... nice :) once again YOU are spot on Craig !
Craig,
I enjoyed your article. I have bee doing independent consulting on the side for the past few years. Its always been a part time gig for me.
I recently made the decision that its time to do it full time. I haven't fully left the safety of my current job but I am on my way. I have worked out a deal with my current emplyee to do contract work X-hours a week. At least this provides me with some security while I build up enough capital and new business to sustain myselft.
Things are going very well! I couldn't be happier with my decision
I would like to re-iterate a few of your points to others who are contemplating starting their own business.
- It is in fact alot of HARD work and takes alot of time (but its very much worth it)
- You have to have a positive attitude and be committed to what you are doing! You have to be dedicated and determined.
- You can't let anyone tell you that you can't do it. (Those people that remind you of the poor statistics of starting your own business are the people who are too scared to do it themselves)
Good luck to those with the drive and determination to take the risks!
HI CRAIG,
YOUR ARTICLE WAS INTERESTING. IT'S JUST USELESS. YOU NEED LUCK WID URSELF ND FOR LUCK U NEED TO STRUGGLE ND FOR STRUGGLE U NEED STREGHNT ND FOR THAT U NEED CONFIDENCE ND FOR CONFIDENCE U NEED KNOWLEDGE AND THATS ALL. AND REMEMBER MONEY MAKES MONEY. FOR MAKING MONEY U NEED MONEY. THATS Y V SAY THAT MONEY MAKES MONEY.
Craig, wonderful post very inspiring. I might even take some of your ideas on board into my own enterprise. Anyway good luck.
I would just like to point out that you repeatedly spelled out realize wrong throughout your whole page...other than that i thought that it was quite enlightening
I love this post! I will become a millionare!!! Taking Action is the most important thing anyone can do to reach their financial independence. I just started a business from this invention I personally made called a solar patio umbrella which charges your cell phones, radio, laptops, fans via a electrical wall outlet & a cigarette outlet. I think it ROCKS!!! I used it on the weekends while work outdoors to play music and charge my cell phone at the same time, it couldn't be any better. I have contacted hotels, resorts, Starbucks, Costco, Walmarts but no one real businessman returns my inquires. This would be beneficial to anyone, especially in theme parks to power up your walkie talkies, blow a small fan, the uses are endless. Especially being from South Florida, its great during Hurricane Season & Black outs. My Moto: "Live Green" - The Solar Solace, LLC visit me at www.TheSolarSolace.com
you are absolutely correct. Period. It will take a lot of hard work as well as working smart. Never stop learning is the most important message.
Hi there. I was just curious why step 2 is so far from step 5. "Focus on what you want to do and let nothing stop you" and "Come up with your killer idea" seem like they are interelated.
Also, it would be nice if you could outline what you did specifically in each of your 7 steps, just as an example. Thanks much.
Hi Craig,
I've done a few mistakes in life when I was younger. As time passed, I become more matured and realise what life has to offer us. You are what you think. I've taken time to learn multiple disciplines that is needed to push yourself towards success in creating the first million which will trigger and amplify your wealth to greater heights.
I've done some research on succesfull people near me and decided to choose real estate as the mean to reach my first million. It's all about the leveraging that we gain by capitalising on the money loaned out by the banks.
Action now makes the different as opportunities surround us everyday. Take action now. That's what i'm doing and going to do till I get the first million.
dear craig,
thank you so much for sharing your perspective with us.i agree with you.you have reinforced my belief and reminded me not to stop learning.once again, thank you and good luck.
Hey no offense taken :)
I actually enjoy the plumbing work I do - fairly laborious, but rewarding when it's done.
Good info with the tips, have always enjoyed RDPD and good to get a refresher - as much as in today's economy Richard K is a bit of a target for the "financial collapse" he always did advocate "cash flow positive" investments.
LOVE IT... I TOOK DOWN PLENTY OF NOTES :-) THANKS SO MUCH! GREAT READ...
Amazing Craig, very well written and extremely powerful for everyone who reads to get motivated. And i do believe in not running behind money, money is just something that will run behind you if you know how to run ahead...or do what you want to do, don't stop anywhere!! Failure is a test .. overcome .. don't give up
Keep up your work bro !!
I find your hub to be interesting. I don't believe that just about anyone can go from zero to millionaire in five years. Yes... there are the exceptions that have the good fortune to have a phenomenal idea AND the resources (people, money, colleagues, etc.) to bring their ideas into fruition.
I believe that it takes a great deal of education first. You have to learn an industry, learn a trade, find a niche, and target a great idea tailor-made for that specific industry. That takes a few years. I do believe that once the knowledge has been gained through a formal education and/or hands on experience that form that point forward, that it is possible to spend another five years and grow a business from business plan to multi-millionaire status.
I do agree that true financial success requires a lifetime of learning.... nut I feel thqt the most important factor is the ability to adapt to a new environment or a new set of circumstances. Having the capability to be ale to go back to school, learn a new trade, earn an additional graduate degree, shift business priorities, and knowing what you don't know are even more important than just simply the commitment to lifelong education. (Lifelong learners can be academians who are not necessarily millionaires) It is the capability to change, adapt, and grow that cultivates $$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Hello Craig,
You seem like a very mature and educated young person who has really got their priorities straight. I write to you not as a person who has realied their business potential but quite the opposite in fact. I am a 20 year old Irish man who is currently working in a very depressing retail job where I work as hard as I can and get no recognition whatsoever. I dropped out of college a year ago as I realised it definitely was not for me. I am currently in debt although not by much. The main reason I want to make money is because I have a girlfriend that I love very much but she is from the USA and I am from Ireland. I work so hard at my job to visit her as once or twice a year and it is next to impossible for me to get a visa for america unless I marry my girlfriend.....which I do not want to do for a few years yet because I have no money or assets. Both of us are just so upset every time we have to leave each other as we never know when we will see each other again. I am so passionate about making money, I have such a strong desire to do it, I just feel like such a loser at the moment that I cannot even think about where to begin. If you can give me any advice at all man I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks
seems like a story but well written and i also feel like something similar but needs lot of hard work
Great and imspiring artical Craig. It's really wonderful experience sharing. I hope you and me will be in a millionare's list in next 5 Years.
This is an fantastic article i have ever read. Keep going on !!!
Well done Craig, I really like your approach towards the matter of becoming a millionaire. May I just add that the intentions with which we act upon our actions actually deliver the final result. In a sense that realizing our true potential in a particular field should urge us to the beginning of our successful enterprise. Which is to be expressed through a selfless dedication serving the world and also should be something from which we draw immense satisfaction at the end of the day.
Very inspirational, and logical! For me, finding what I'm passionate about is the hardest thing, but that's part of the challenge.
To be a millionaire in 5 years, you need to save $500 dollars per day. This is difficult feat to achieve, but it is not an impossibility.
Thanks for your time its people like u that the world need more of.Kevin the next millionaire.
I would like to regenerate sandlot baseball back into Detroit, Michigan; with an ultimate goal of owning a major league baseball team in Detroit, MI.
Craig
Thanks for the inspiration and direction. Like you, I truly believe that each individual has the potential to achieve such greatness IF, we take ACTION! Action always seems to be the common denominator between most business millionaires and the remaining hourly/salaried masses. Continued success Craig and keep adding value to us all!
friend recommended this to me. great read. see you at the top

I loved this! I am 20 and plan on being a millionaire between 25-30. I found your article agreeable especially giving value, life long learning, and not spreading yourself too thin. Lots of good mindset info. I would add communications, problem solving, and alternative thinking to things to master list. Thank you!
Thankyou, this has really helped me in choosing which direction I want my life to go. I've just turned 13 and i'm very business orientated and your article has provided me with some great tips for the future. Thankyou again.
Hi Craig,
Understand the facts of the world?
Hi Carig,
You have given the most useful tips for a person looking to start a new business.
You are practical and I agree that "Life is a Learning process".
To be a business man is to be a "Master of little bit of everything". Should have the open mind to learn new things and in the process make money.
Thanks so much for your helpful tips !
I love what you wrote, take many points uot of that,Thank you.
Thank u for your amazing post,
For everyone who is reading this post and the comments :
It is true what he say's but i think the most important things are beleve in youself and don't give up!
I started a webdesign company a few months ago.. this issn't easy for me cause my wife is pregnant and i also have a 10 months old daughter.
And the fact is i am only 20 years old..
I was addicted to drugs for 5 year and i had problems with the police.. i even have a criminal reccord..
I was looking for a way to take care of my wife ( i am maryed to ) and my children..
I receave 650 euro's from the goverment and that is not even enough to buy food and pay my rent..
so the thing is i started a webdesign company..
the main thing is that i beleved in it!
1,5 week after i started i got my first assigment.
I earned 1142 euro ( 1.649,73 dollar ) of it..
my second assigment i gain by calling a number that i saw on a car.. again that made me 550 euro ( 794 dollar )
I hardly have time because i have to take care of my daughter and wife and still i managed to earn 1692 euro (2443 dollar ) in my first month of owning a company..
Please do what ever it is that you want and beleve you will sucseed AND U WILL!!
Thanks to Craig Dewe for writing this and i hope that the people who read this article and the comments take control of there live's instead of letting there live's take control of them..
I did that and it brought me a awfull lot of shit!
( sorry for my bad english i am tired and it is late out here )
Everyone have a nice day and even when you are not feeling so well know that there is always a way as long as you beleve in yourself, doing things you like and NEVER GIVE UP!
God bless you all
(ps. i am not putting a link to my company because i want to inspire people to take control and not to promote myself )
thanks for the info, just wanted you to know i starting with writing a comment. Here's to becoming a millionare!
I on my way.
Reading your article is the 1st step to gearing up for winning the Race of becoming a Multi Millionaire...... Thanks Craig :) .

Hi Craig,
I hvae been in business now fo 9 years, and at the age of 28 am on paper now a millionaire, youre article is so true, it require effort and sheer persistance
Im amazed still at how people cant see that they have to offer value, first and foremost, and I mean truly great value, before you know it you have created a snowball effect.
One point Id like to make is dont get to tied up in your business, this is certainly my problem, I have literally sacrificed my personal life to make it happen, a good work / life balance is the key, im just not sure how it is achieved!
I feel like shedding tears right now, Why haven't i discovered this long ago? I should have been a millionaire by now.
I must tell you nothing but the truth; YOU ARE SIMPLY THE BEST. Though i haven't taken action yet cos i'm a bit confuse about what business to start.
I'm a 300 level zoology student in the Federal University of Agriculture Markurdi, Benue state, Nigeria. I'm currently a rapper and a producer(unsigned). I do music with passion but i don't see my future in that line. All i want in life is to do a decent job after graduation and accumulate wealth to later become a millionaire. But the problem with this plan is; ~there's less job opportunities down here.
All day, all night, i search the internet for possible business a zoologist can engage in and be the best at but to no avail. My current plan is to join the Nigerian Police Force after graduation(something i don't really like) but another part of me wants to do music and yet another part wants to do something related to my course of study. What can a young man do? I'm so confused-(A man with dreams of becoming a millionaire)
please i need your help.
*what possible business can a zoologist do and be the best at?

hi, great job, but i wounder: can sport be a resistance in making business?
so motivated to do something but still in progress where to start from??
Craig thanks for the feedback! I trust and believe in everything you said and I have read the majority of the books you have posted. After 3 business failures I decided to go for an MBA and DBA in entrepreneurship. I also believe this is the most predictable route to get there. Thanks for the encouragement and wisdom. I have no doubt that your passion will lead you and many others to a successful and fulfilled life! Again thanks.

Yezzir!!!!! Nice one man! That's all factual and useful, you gotta give before you get, and set an impressive value, I like that and thanks very much, its another puzzle collected to my knowledge, and now I'm seeing the bigger picture clearer.

Dear Craig,
i always found that this world is so stuck in a rut and people like you and alike are reminders that there is another path, the easier one to self discovery.
a million dollar to me is like grades in school. the harder you work the better you score. thats the way money attracts one too. the harder one works the more faithful money follows him.
but the blunder is that we always do what is not natural in us. as i know each man is as unique as a key. no two keys are similar in this world. and so if you opened improper locks with yourself then you only end up being frustrated.
in my quest to finding my excitement, i have lots of ideas similar to yours. but of course, money is just a score on your report card called passbook. the only advice you need to listen to is that of your heart. and the only learning you need to do is from the experience of the others or alike. like my dad always said, " NEVER LEARN MATH FROM A FRENCH TEACHER".
i am happy to admire you in your pursuit. great going Craig. may your wisdom guide many more in your pursuit to your destiny.... with warm regards... indianbreakfast.
I had a great time reading you article and it contains a lot of precious information. Obviously Im gonna be 1 of the millionaire. It's a real possibility for an average guy to become a millionaire!

Absolutely brilliant and I agree with everything you have said here - particularly the bit about lifelong learning. Actually that's the best fun bit! Also I love hanging out with other entrepreneurs. I'm off to read your other hubs now. Your new fan, Nicola
